EAAD | Campus de Couros | IDEGUI
On 20 November 2025, Professors Julia
Valle Noronha and Namkyu Chun from the Department of Design at the School of
Arts, Design and Architecture at Aalto University, Finland, will give the
following lectures at the Guimarães Institute of Design.
4.30 p.m. | More than meets the eyes:
fashion and experience | Julia Valle Noronha
Summary | Visual experience is largely
prioritised in fashion and clothing design. However, the experiential dimension
of clothing expands the sense of visuality to other sensorial perceptions. This
talk seeks to discuss the ways we experience fashion and what that entails in
ways of designing, consuming and relating to clothing.
5.00 p.m. | Design Beyond Humans and
Things | Namkyu Chun
Summary | Throughout the development of design, as
it has expanded far beyond Western societies, the relatively limited knowledge
of non-Western cultures has been exploited. In order to gain an inclusive
understanding of design and transform a monologue into an interactive dialogue,
it is necessary to embrace different cultural perspectives. Thus, by analysing
four cases in various subfields of South Korean design, this study projects the
possibility of incorporating an East Asian cultural perspective. Although the
traditional approach to design is centred on “things”, human-centredness has
recently challenged this perspective. Through the lens of Korean culture, more
contemporary discussions about design, including activism, decolonisation, and
post-anthropocentrism, are an effort to recognise hidden or forgotten
relationships in design, beyond thing-centred and human-centred design, i.e.,
relationship-centred design. In the context of South Korea, the ways in which
relationship is considered in relation to design are presented to initiate more
active conversations between cultures.
