Conservation and management of modern movement
heritage

Gulbenkian Foundation
The
colloquium “Keeping It Modern. Conservation and Heritage Management of the
Modern Movement” takes place in the context of the exhibitions No Place is
Desert:
- Piscina
de Marés (1960-2021) and
- Beira Central Station, Mozambique (1957-1966),
on show in
the Atrium of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Art Library and part of
projects funded by the Getty Foundation, based in Los Angeles.
The
colloquium:
- aims
to debate central issues in the field of conservation and management of modern
heritage, with the direct contribution of representatives and members of
prestigious institutions in this field, such as the Getty Foundation, the Le
Corbusier Foundation, the World Monuments Fund, Docomomo, the ICOMOS
International Scientific Committee of 20th Century Heritage
(ISC20c), as well as the Universities of Minho and Porto;
- is
organised in 2 sessions followed by a debate and a visit to the exhibitions
with the curators:
1st session dedicated to the conservation and
reuse of modern heritage with the participation of international speakers who
will present concrete cases of cooperation and intervention projects in
emblematic works of modern architecture.
2nd session: will focus on the projects funded
by the Getty Foundation's Keeping It Modern initiative:

Piscina de Marés (Matosinhos, Portugal) and
- Beira Central Station (Beira, Mozambique), from their contextualisation to the presentation
of the respective Management and Conservation Plans, organised by Professors Elisiário
Miranda and Paulo Mendonça, from the School of Architecture, Art
and Design of the University of Minho.
