The School of Economics, Management and Political Science of the University of Minho (EEG) is proud to announce that Joana Maria Trapela Marques Garcia, a PhD student in Economics, presented her doctoral thesis entitled "Essays on Exporters and Multinational firms.", on 28th February 2025.
Following the author's words, his research work "focuses on companies that operate beyond their country's borders, either through exports or as part of multinational groups. Although they represent a small percentage of all companies, they are very important in economic terms. In the United States, for example, multinationals represent 1% of all companies, but generate 40% of sales.
In four articles, the thesis explores different aspects of the behaviour of these companies. The first assesses how they choose the currency they use for exporting services and whether the US dollar plays a dominant role in this trade. The second investigates the impact of increases in the minimum wage on the exports of manufacturing companies. The third investigates the extent to which multinational groups use imports of services from tax havens as a way of transferring profits to those jurisdictions. The fourth article characterises the employees of companies located in the Madeira Free Trade Zone and assesses the effects of a reform implemented in that jurisdiction aimed at discouraging tax avoidance."
The doctoral thesis was supervised by Niguel Ângelo Reis Portela, Full Professor in Economics Department of the School of Economics, Management and Political Science of the University of Minho and João Luís Morais Amador, Invited Assistant Professor at NOVA School of Business and Economics.
EEG congratulates Joana Maria Trapela Marques Garcia on his defence and wishes her every professional and personal success!
