Lecture with Márcia Oliveira | “Imagem – documento – praxis: a arte como exercício de re-interpretação da história” Back

Wednesday, 11/23/2022
Next Wednesday, November 23rd, EAAD welcomes Márcia Oliveira, with the lecture “Image – document – praxis: art as an exercise in reinterpreting history”
This lecture intends to explore the processes by several contemporary artists promoting an effective re-interpretation of historical narratives of the dictatorship, the colonial war and the processes of colonization, questioning their apparent objectivity. Through several case studies, we will focus on the intersectional practices developed by several artists who move between the interstices of the materiality of the artistic object and the meaning of the image, of collective and individual perspectives and memories, and of the political and affective dimensions of art. The proposed reflection will have as its starting point the analysis of works by artists Ana Vidigal, Filipa César and the Brazilian Rosana Paulino.

Márcia Oliveira is an Assistant Researcher at the Center for Humanistic Studies at the University of Minho and belongs to the research group on Gender Arts and Post-Colonial Studies (GAPS). She was one of PI of the research project Women, arts and dicatatorship. Portugal, Brazil and Portuguese speaking African Countries (2018-2021) and visiting scholar at Rutgers University, USA (2016). Graduated in Journalism from the University of Coimbra and Master in Aesthetics from FCSH-Universidade Nova de Lisboa, she completed her PhD at the University of Minho in 2013 with a thesis on art and feminism in Portugal in the post-revolution context, published in a book by Húmus in 2015.
