On September 21, 2026, the School of Architecture, Art and Design of the University of Minho (EAAD) in Guimarães will host the opening of the exhibition "REBALANCING STREETs".
Set within the framework of European Mobility Week, the event marks the public presentation of the findings from the exploratory project STREET — Street Transformations, Rebalancing Ecology and Environment issues in urban Territories.Funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the project was developed at EAAD’s Landscapes, Heritage and Territory Laboratory (Lab2PT), in collaboration with the Future Design of Streets association.
The organizing team includes researchers Ivo Oliveira, Daniel Casas-Valle, and Marcela Percú.An Innovative Tool for Urban Planning
The STREET project was designed to bridge a persistent gap between scientific knowledge and practical urban planning tools. The research led to the creation of a street-scale evaluation tool that integrates natural, social, and mobility dimensions into a single diagnostic instrument, calibrated for real-world planning conditions using 27 specific indicators.Aligned with global agendas for decarbonization, ecological regeneration, and socio-spatial justice, the final exhibition will showcase graphic and textual diagnostic materials evaluating 9 Portuguese streets transformed after the adoption of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This initial presentation offers a platform for public discussion ahead of the future publication of a book and a Digital Atlas, which will detail all 25 streets studied across 5 Portuguese municipalities.

- 4:45 PM - 5:15 PM: Debate with guest speakers
- 5:15 PM - 6:00 PM: Official exhibition opening
Street transformation plays a critical role in environmental regulation, climate adaptation, and daily urban life. Because this multidisciplinary challenge affects everyone's daily routines, EAAD and the organizing team invite researchers, technical experts, designers, policymakers, and the general public to attend the opening session.
