EAAD - Campus de Azurém - Museu
As part of Plan A of the PhD in Architecture,
2024/2025 edition, Class #06 of the Advanced Knowledge Seminar, entitled
“ARCHITECTURE, STRUCTURES AND CONSTRUCTION: Intersections, Incursions and New
Perspectives”, will take place on March 28 at 2pm at the EAAD Museum, and will
be given by Professor Paulo J.S. Cruz.
Synopsis | The class will explore new
perspectives and emerging challenges at the intersection of Architecture,
Structures and Construction. The innovative use of traditional materials such
as glass, steel, ceramics and concrete will be analyzed. Recent examples of PhD
research at EAAD will be presented, which explore modular, sustainable and
efficient solutions. In addition, the class will highlight the activity of the
School of Architecture, Art and Design's laboratories, which are part of the
ACTech - Architecture, Construction and Technology Hub (https://actech.uminho.pt/), with special
emphasis on the ARENA - Advanced Design & Technology Laboratory, which
investigates the integration of advanced digital techniques in construction
automation and additive manufacturing.

The R&D activity aims to boost the convergence of Architecture,
Construction and Technology through research related to recent advances in the
art, practice and theory of these multidisciplinary fields. It has dedicated
its efforts to creating the following laboratories: (1) Construction and
Technology Laboratory; (2) Advanced Ceramics Laboratory; (3) Design and
Advanced Technology Laboratory. The Architecture, Construction and Technology
platform brings together these facilities and publicizes their activities (https://actech.uminho.pt/).
