SCA Lecture #06 of Plan A of the PhD in Architecture | 2024/2025 Edition Back

As part of Plan A of the PhD in Architecture, 2024/2025 edition, Class #06 of the Advanced Knowledge Seminar, entitled “ARCHITECTURE, STRUCTURES AND CONSTRUCTION: Intersections, Incursions and New Perspectives”, will take place on March 28 at 2pm at the EAAD Museum, and will be given by Professor Paulo J.S. Cruz.
Synopsis | The class will explore new perspectives and emerging challenges at the intersection of Architecture, Structures and Construction. The innovative use of traditional materials such as glass, steel, ceramics and concrete will be analyzed. Recent examples of PhD research at EAAD will be presented, which explore modular, sustainable and efficient solutions. In addition, the class will highlight the activity of the School of Architecture, Art and Design's laboratories, which are part of the ACTech - Architecture, Construction and Technology Hub (https://actech.uminho.pt/), with special emphasis on the ARENA - Advanced Design & Technology Laboratory, which investigates the integration of advanced digital techniques in construction automation and additive manufacturing.

Bio | Full Professor of Construction and Technology at the School of Architecture, Art and Design at the University of Minho (EAAD) and Researcher at the Landscapes, Heritage and Territory Laboratory (Lab2PT). President of EAAD (2021-2027 and 2004-2011). Pro-Rector of the University of Minho for Quality of Life and Infrastructures (2017-2021). Director of Lab2PT - Laboratory of Landscapes, Heritage and Territory (2015-2017). President of the Guimarães Design Institute (since 2015). Editor-in-chief of the journal 'Architecture, Structures and Construction', Springer (since 2021). The R&D activity aims to boost the convergence of Architecture, Construction and Technology through research related to recent advances in the art, practice and theory of these multidisciplinary fields. It has dedicated its efforts to creating the following laboratories: (1) Construction and Technology Laboratory; (2) Advanced Ceramics Laboratory; (3) Design and Advanced Technology Laboratory. The Architecture, Construction and Technology platform brings together these facilities and publicizes their activities (https://actech.uminho.pt/).
