"Suspending" or interrupting enrolment
1. How do I suspend/interrupt my enrolment?
- At UMinho there is no concept of "suspending" enrolment.
- Once you have completed your enrolment and/or registration, you have the option of requesting its cancellation, under the terms and within the deadlines defined in the Academic Regulations. It should be noted, however, that if you cancel your enrolment in the year you enter the course, you will lose the place you obtained.
- Cancellation of enrolment may be requested on the Academic Portal using a specific form by 30 October or within 30 days of enrolment (for courses starting in February).
- If you maintain your enrolment and choose not to enrol for the following academic year, you will be considered to have interrupted it. If you subsequently wish to retake your studies, you will have to apply for re-enrolment.
2. I want to cancel my enrolment for the academic year. How do I proceed?
- Requests to cancel your enrolment for the academic year must be submitted exclusively through the Academic Portal's Electronic Secretariat, option Requests > New Request > Cancellation of Enrolment, by 30 October (courses starting in September) or within 30 working days of enrolment (courses with lags), as established in the Academic Regulations.
- The following exceptions apply:
a) Students who have demonstrably applied for a scholarship, who can request the cancellation of their enrolment up to 5 days after the communication of the final, negative decision from the funding institution;
b) Foreign students who require a study visa, who can request cancellation of their enrolment up to 5 days after the communication of the final negative decision and no later than 30 November;
c) Students who, at the time of enrolment, require accreditation of previous training or experience, who may request the cancellation of their enrolment up to 5 days after the communication of a final negative decision.
3. Do I have to pay tuition fees if I cancel my enrolment for the academic year?
- It depends on the date of enrolment and the date of the cancellation request. According to the Academic Regulations, the cancellation of enrolment releases the student from the payment of instalments that have not yet fallen due, but they remain obliged to pay the tuition fees that have fallen due, except in cases where:
a) After the instalment is due, the student is notified that he/she has not been awarded a scholarship for which he/she has proven to have applied;
b) The instalment is due before the date of enrolment;
c) After the instalment is due, the student is informed that he or she has not been awarded a visa;
d) After the instalment is due, the student is notified of the rejection of the accreditation request.
4. I enrolled at the beginning of the academic year and stopped attending. Do I have to pay the fees?
- Yes. Enrolment on bachelor's, master's or doctoral programmes entails the provision of an educational service and requires the payment of tuition fees, as set out in the Academic Regulations.
- Choosing not to attend the course does not invalidate the provision of the service you have requested or, therefore, the obligation to pay the tuition fee.
