Postgraduate courses | Master and Doctoral degrees

The postgraduate academic offer of the School of Architecture, Art and Design of the University of Minho includes the Master in Product Design and Services (60 ECTS | 4 semesters) and the Doctoral Program in Architecture (180 ECTS | 6 semesters).

 

2nd cycle course: Master in Product and Services Design

The EAAD's Master's in Product and Service Design offers strategic training for the designer's professional activity, articulating critical, methodological and theoretical practice with socio-cultural and market aspects. During the course, design is seen as a basic tool in the world of companies and institutions, with the designer's role centred on the overall conception of research and development.

In accordance with the mobility strategies of the School of Architecture, Art and Design of the University of Minho, and partnerships with other postgraduate teaching programmes, the Master's in Product and Service Design offers a wide range of opportunities for students to complement their training with experience in foreign institutions

3rd cycle course: PhD in Architecture

With many years of experience, the course general objectives are to develop competences, skills and applied research methods in the field of Architecture through the use of conceptual and methodological frameworks that contribute to the broadening of the disciplinary field of Architecture and that are developed according to a precise research object and applied in original, pertinent and scientifically relevant research in one of the speciality areas chosen by the student:

1.     Architectural Culture;

2.     City and Territory;

3.     Construction and Technology.

The PhD in Architecture, with 180 ECTS, lasts 6 semesters and can be completed through one of the two alternative plans:

Plan A:

1st year: Doctoral course

2nd and 3rd years: Development and completion of thesis

Plan B:

1st, 2nd and 3rd years: Development and completion of the student's thesis


Our PhD in Architecture is articulated with the Research Unit Landscape, Heritage and Territory Laboratory (Lab2PT), evaluated by FCT as "Excellent" with a vast team of researchers in various scientific fields: Archaeology, Architecture and Urbanism, Design, Geography, Geology, History and Visual Arts.

As part of the "UMinho Postgraduate Alliance", the EAAD offers the following portfolio of specialised training courses aimed at the specific needs of the labour market and society:

 

Specialised Training Course in Building Facade and Envelope Technology

This course focuses on developing the concept, design, calculation, production, installation and maintenance of complex building façades, contributing to consolidation and innovation in the façade sector.

Academic credits: 40 ECTS

Course duration: 360 hours

Specialised Training Course in Robotic Manufacturing in Design, Architecture and Construction

This course focuses on training professionals in the field of Design, Architecture and Construction, following an interdisciplinary approach that aims to respond to the growing need for more sustainable and optimised production and construction systems. The course meets training needs in emerging design and manufacturing methodologies through the integration of automation and robotics systems.

Academic credits: 15 ECTS

Course duration: 1 semester

Specialised Training Course: Special Construction Planning Technician

This course responds to an effective need for postgraduate training, helping professionals at any stage of their lives to continue their studies in a way that recognises the skills and competences they have acquired. The teaching method is innovative, b-learning, which allows approaching a diverse and geographically broad group of professionals and potential students. The b-learning method will also allow company employees to attend the course in a mixed timetable between face-to-face classes and remote synchronous e-learning classes.

Academic credits: 45 ECTS

Course duration: 2 semesters

Regime/Schedule: Mixed (weekday evenings and/or Saturday mornings) b-learning



Street Design

This course is aimed at graduates and holders of a master's in Architecture, Urban Planning and related areas, as well as professionals in sectors where working in the street and public space, in its physical organization, but also socially and environmentally, justifies the acquisition of skills in intervention and representation methodologies. Within a framework of sustainable development committed to the goals of the Roadmap for Carbon Neutrality, the aim is for trainees to acquire fundamental skills for transforming the street, questioning the dominant models and processes and committing themselves to original and emerging solutions.

Specialized Training Course in Scenography

This course is aimed at professionals and practitioners of the performing arts, particularly theatre, but also at anyone with an interest in the area. José Capela proposes, in a series of after-work sessions combining lectures and discussion, a general and transdisciplinary overview of the evolution of scenography and performance spaces, from the invention of perspective in the Renaissance to today's art trends (making some approximations to his own universe of work). This contact with issues of scenography will culminate in an intensive practical exercise.

Short Courses

Drawing Short Course

This introductory Drawing course covers different techniques, materials and processes, based on the idea that drawing is a graphic expression that finds its matrix in the observation of reality. The free drawing course is divided into study themes, Object, Space and Human Figure/Movement, developed through the process of seeing-understanding-drawing with different themes and/or contexts.

Course duration: 3 months

Short Course in Abstract Painting

The course aims to train and/or instruct potential painters/artists (or artists already developing work in continuity) on the possibilities and new pictorial options present in international abstract art, helping them to understand not only what they already do and want to do, but also what they intend to do.

Course duration: 4 months (96 hours)

Short Course in Watercolour Painting

The course aims to awaken the creative autonomy of each participant to develop their own work and build their own artistic profile. Based on basic exercises on the various watercolour techniques, the end result will be a didactic portfolio on the techniques that were presented and applied in exercises during the course by the participants.
